New York Mayor flew to Washington and then headed right back home before even meeting with White House officials to push for relief from migrant crisis he's said will 'destroy' his city

New York Mayor Eric Adams flew to Washington Thursday morning and then abruptly went right back home — canceling meetings with Biden administration officials to address the migrant crisis that he has said is destroying the Big Apple — as word emerged the FBI was raiding the home of his top fundraiser.

The early morning raid of Adams campaign aide Brianna Suggs' home was part of a public corruption probe by Manhattan federal prosecutors into whether his 2021 mayoral bid accepted foreign money in coordination with a Brooklyn construction company and the Turkish government, the New York Times reported.

The alleged scheme hinged on straw donors, according to portions of the search warrant obtained by the Times.

Adams’ reelection campaign has paid Suggs close to $100,000 in the last year for her role as a fundraiser and consultant. Suggs was also paid more than $50,000 for her role in Adams' first campaign, the paper reported.

Agents from one of the FBI’s public corruption squads reportedly questioned Suggs, during the search of her home in Brooklyn's Crown Heights.

“We are at that location carrying out law enforcement action,” an FBI spokesperson told the Times.

The search warrant "sought evidence of the theft of federal funds and conspiracy to steal federal funds, wire fraud and wire fraud conspiracy, as well as campaign contributions by foreign nationals and conspiracy to make such contributions," the Times reported, saying the feds are keenly interested in whether the campaign engaged in a quid pro quo with with the construction company and Turkish officials.

There is no confirmation that Adams canceled the migrant crisis talks because of the raid on Suggs’ home. A spokesperson said only that the mayor had to “deal with a matter.”

Adams’ trip to Washington came after months of the mayor urging federal officials to intervene more directly in migration issues.

“We’re getting no support on this national crisis,” Adams said in September.

The mayor has said that the migration crisis would “destroy New York City” – remarks which garnered praise from some Republicans, while being criticized by advocacy groups.

The Legal Aid Society and the Coalition for the Homeless said that Adams was villainizing “people who fled unimaginable situations in their home countries” and compared the Democratic mayor’s remarks to those of “fringe politicians on the far-right,” according to the New York Times.

On Wednesday, Adams told WNBC that the current situation was “unsustainable," suggesting that the Legal Aid Society, which criticized current plans to house hundreds of asylum seekers in Floyd Bennett Field, join him and other mayors in Washington.

The mayor’s return to New York was reportedly so sudden that members of New York’s delegation to Congress weren’t aware of the change. An aide will seemingly attend a White House meeting, in place of Adams, according to WABC.

A spokesperson for Adams did not immediately respond to The Messenger's request for comment.

Suggs, the New York Post reported, is very close with Ingrid Lewis-Martin, one of the mayor's most trusted advisors.
